Jason Corbett, an Irish widower and father of two, moved to North Carolina in 2008 with his American au pair, Molly Martens. In 2015, he was killed during a violent altercation at his home involving Molly and her father, former FBI agent Thomas Martens, both of whom were later prosecuted.

While Molly and Thomas claimed self-defense, their 2017 conviction was overturned by the North Carolina Supreme Court in 2021, and a new trial was ordered. In 2023, Molly entered a no contest plea, and Thomas pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter. Their release from prison in June 2024 reignited questions about the incident.

The case becomes further complicated by a bitter custody battle over Jason’s children, Jack and Sarah, who were only 10 and 8 years old at the time of the killing.
